Massive Ukrainian Drone Attack Hits Moscow Ahead of Key U.S.-Ukraine Talks

Russian Strikes

Russia reported a "massive" overnight drone attack by Ukraine on Tuesday, just hours before high-stakes discussions between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia.

According to Russia’s Defense Ministry, Ukrainian forces launched 337 drones, with 91 targeting Moscow. If confirmed, this would be one of the largest drone assaults on Russian soil since the invasion of Ukraine. Falling debris caused damage to buildings in Moscow, prompting Mayor Sergei Sobyanin to label it the "most massive" attack to date.

Casualties and Disruptions in Moscow

  • Two people were killed, and at least six others injured, according to Moscow regional governor Andrey Vorobyev.
  • Debris ignited a fire in a parking lot, destroying over 20 vehicles.
  • Several airports in and around Moscow were temporarily closed, and flights were rerouted for safety.

Ukraine Defends Against Russian Strikes

Meanwhile, Ukraine's Air Force reported successfully intercepting Russian ballistic missile and drone attacks overnight. However, at least one person was killed and 18 injured, according to Ukrainian officials.

U.S.-Ukraine Talks Amid Escalating Tensions

The attacks occurred ahead of a scheduled meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, and top Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia. Zelensky’s Chief of Staff, Andriy Yermak, emphasized Ukraine’s commitment to protecting its interests and working closely with Washington.

The U.S. has reportedly scaled back intelligence sharing with Ukraine, limiting data that could be used for offensive operations against Russia. Senator Rubio stated that the discussions will explore potential concessions from Ukraine and determine whether the U.S. will resume full military aid and intelligence support.

Intensified Ground Fighting and Rising Hostilities

  • The U.S.-Ukraine relationship has soured following a heated confrontation between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.
  • Russia recently launched a major aerial assault on Ukraine, killing over two dozen people last weekend.
  • Ukraine’s position in Russia’s Kursk region is weakening, reducing Kyiv’s leverage in negotiations.

Largest Ukrainian Drone Strike on Moscow

This attack surpasses Ukraine’s previous largest assault on Moscow last November, when 34 drones were intercepted. Similar attacks in September killed at least one person and forced airport closures.

As tensions escalate, the latest developments could significantly influence the course of the war and Ukraine’s strategic position in upcoming peace negotiations.
